The technology of space exploration and general communication sectors based above the earth are important to the tech industry and the future of technical careers. It is a blooming industry that will just get bigger as the years go on and the opportunities to work in space, perhaps even in just a civilian role, will start to open up tremendously in the next decade.
Take the International Space Station, a habitable and artificial satellite that sits in the lower orbit of our planet. It was first launched in 1998 and the only personnel that would go there were qualified astronauts and cosmonauts. Now space faring personnel from every nation in the world are eligible to go up and work on the station.
There are now a number of civilian jobs where you could work up in the space station, and if not now than in the very near future. The ISS is getting bigger and right now it is so large it can be seen with the naked eye by those of us down on earth. The crew on the ISS rotates on a regular basis and getting on board with a tech career in space doesn't get much better than a job aboard the space station.
Careers in space are varied and many – from working at mission control you could be helping to form tech careers in space by planning and designing missions, building or designing space craft or parts, lecturing on space exploration or studying magnetic structures. The European Space Agency, which is Europe's own version of NASA, is regularly looking for employees to join them on Young Graduate Trainee Programs. This would certainly have to be the first step to getting tech careers in space where you may one day get the chance to actually go up and work on the ISS or perhaps a satellite in need of repair.
A typical day for a technical operator on the ISS would be to get up at 0600hrs, inspect vital operations are functioning correctly on the station, eat breakfast, and perform a daily exercise pattern before starting work at 0830hrs. Generally, the crew will work 10-hour days during the week and five hours on a Saturday and the set sleep time begins at 2130hrs.
Other tech careers in space are being developed all the time and prospective employees will need to study in the fields of biotechnology, nanotechnology, science, and meteorology to become a candidate for a role in space. However, these programs are not just limited to those subjects but they do make for a good starting point in gaining a tech career in space.
